Kelly Alderson – Head Instructor

I started training with Bristol Krav Maga as a student in 2010. Like many of you reading this, I wanted to learn practical & effective self defence skills. I have trained in several other combat sports and as much as I enjoyed and appreciated learning these valuable core skills,  I wondered how they would work in a real life situation or even more importantly, how I would react myself when put under serious pressure.  The more I read about Krav Maga, the more excited I became about trying it for myself and set about researching the local options. I chose Bristol Krav Maga because of their direct links to the source of Krav Maga as the only official KMG school in Bristol. Within a couple of sessions I was hooked. I loved the simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness of Krav Maga and it was also apparent that I had found a really great club, with a very special atmosphere in which to train.

In 2014, after completing the KMG General Instructor Course, I took over the club and also became Head Instructor. I am passionate about teaching Krav Maga and ensuring our students have sufficient skills to protect themselves and the knowledge and understanding  to avoid any potential conflict in the first place. I also enjoy helping our students achieve their individual goals through Krav Maga, whether that be fitness, flexibility, confidence, decision making or building self-esteem.

There is a very special vibe in Bristol Krav Maga. No egos. Everyone is there to train hard, whilst supporting each other and having plenty of fun along the way.

History of BKM – Stuart Overal

I’d originally started Bristol Krav Maga in 2010 because I wanted to give something back to the community as it was my opinion that high quality self defence should be affordable and available to everyone.

I wanted students to have the assurance that at Bristol Krav Maga they were learning one of the most effective and up to date self defence fighting systems. My philosophy was also to ensure students learned what works in self defence situation and to take away no false positives.

I also felt that being linked to Krav Maga Global was highly important so that students have access to a wide variety of specialist training courses and seminars.

At Bristol Krav Maga students have gained confidence fitness and the necessary solutions to defend themselves and others tactically whilst training in a serious but fun club atmosphere.

History of Krav Maga – Imi Lichtenfeld

Krav Maga literally means “Contact Combat”, and is a self defence and fighting system which is widely regarded as the most practical and effective of its kind in the world today.

Founded by Imi Lichtenfeld, the system has its origins on the violent streets of pre-war Europe at the beginning of the Nazi uprising. It was here that Imi, who was also a champion Boxer, Wrestler and Gymnast gained first hand, a vast experience of real life violence and the seeds of Krav Maga were sown. In the 1940’s Imi fled Europe for Palestine where he joined the military, initially the Hagana resistance where he quickly became their hand to hand combat instructor.

In 1948 when the state of Israel was created, he joined the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) and became the chief instructor of Physical Fitness and Krav Maga. During 20 years of service Imi personally trained Israel’s top fighters and elite units of the IDF and in this time he was able to develop the system further, continually testing Krav Maga in extreme combat situations. After retiring from active duty Imi began adapting Krav Maga for civilian needs and it was during this time that he encountered an exceptionally talented student by the name of Eyal Yanilov.

About Eyal Yanilov’s KMG

Eyal Yanilov became Imi’s closest student and was given the task of writing the first official civilian Krav Maga syllabus.  In 1996 Eyal and Imi founded the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) with a view to spreading the teaching of the system beyond Israel. Eyal spent time in Europe and the USA spreading the word and very quickly the global demand for Krav Maga became too large for the IKMF.

In 2010 Eyal Yanilov created Krav Maga Global (KMG), a global infrastructure designed to disseminate Krav Maga throughout the world in a more structured format whilst maintaining the highest level of training. Under the personal supervision of Eyal, Krav Maga Global operates a team of highly qualified instructors known as the ‘Global and International Teams’ who are responsible for delivering Krav Maga instructors education, exclusive workshops and specialist courses throughout the world.
